First Draft:
In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the American dream is demonstrated. The American dream in this story is to have both money and love. However, we all know that sometimes you just can’t have both. The characters in the story try to live with both and end up having a lot of problems along the way. This story sets a good example of how you can’t always have everything that you want. With the American dream Myrtle, Gatsby, and Daisy confuse money with love and end up losing what they already had.
Myrtle dreams of being with Tom because he has a lot of money and she doesn’t have much beings she is part of the lower class. Tom will buy her anything that she asks for. “‘My dear,’ she cried, ‘I’m going to give you this dress as soon as I’m through with it. I’ve go to get another one tomorrow. I’m going to have a list of all the things I’ve got to get. A massage and a wave and a collar for the dog and one of those cute little ash trays where you touch a spring, and a wreath with a black silk bow for mother’s grave that’ll last all summer. I got to write down a list so I won’t forget all the thing I got to do.’”(Fitzgerald 40-41) Myrtle knew that as long as she had Tom, she could have whatever she wanted. Tom had bought her a puppy that she wanted for the apartment they had in New York City. Myrtle was married to Wilson, who worked at a gas station and didn’t get much for money. They lived in the Valley of Ashes, which was like a lower class town. Myrtle felt that with Tom she could live the American dream, but she heads up getting hit by a car and dies. Tom has lost his lover, but yet he is able to move on with Daisy as if he didn’t know her that well.
Gatsby changed everything about himself so he would have enough money for Daisy to be with him. Gatsby was part of the lower class when he lived at home with his family. Gatsby met Daisy with he was heading off to war. The two of them spent about a month together. When Gatsby left for the war, Daisy said that she would wait for him. However, Daisy does not wait for him and goes off and marries Tom. Tom had a lot of money and Daisy’s father approved of him. When Gatsby finished serving in the war, he build a mansion across from Daisy’s house so he could still be close to her. He had big parties at his house, hoping that one day Daisy would come walking in. Gatsby didn’t get his money by heritance he got it by bootlegging. Gatsby meets up with Daisy five years later and Gatsby shows Daisy everything that he had. Daisy was amazing and seemed to be falling for him all over again. Tom and Gatsby begin to fight over Daisy and whom she really loves. Gatsby says that it has been going on for five years. Tom says that it couldn’t have been going in for that long. Gatsby wanted Daisy to tell tom that she never loved him, but Daisy said that that would be lie. Gatsby tells Tom, “‘She never loved you, do you hear?’… ‘She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!’” Gatsby changed his life because he felt that if he wanted to live the American dream he need money to have Daisy. Daisy was everything that he dreamed of. Gatsby ends up getting shot and nobody goes to his funeral. Daisy, the one who he truly cares for, doesn’t even come. She doesn’t even send a letter of anything. She just moves on with out him like she didn’t really know him that well.
Daisy is in a relationship for money; she would never marry a man who didn’t have money. Tom has affairs a lot, but Daisy will not leave him because of his money. They just move always if Tom and his lover got too close. The night before Daisy’s wedding, she was a mess because she had received a letter from Gatsby. Daisy was no completely over him, but he didn’t have enough money to support her. When Daisy saw Gatsby for the first time in five years, she was in shock and amazed with what he all had. Beings Gatsby had money, Daisy wanted to be with him. Money seemed to be the only thing that weighed on her mind. “‘Her voice is full of money, he said suddenly.’”(Fitzgerald 127) Gatsby says that when he is talking with Nick. Everyone can see that a man with money interests her very much. Daisy could love someone and be very close to them, but refuse to marry them because they did not have enough money. Daisy started spending more time with Gatsby and she started to feel closer to him. When they all went into the city together, Tom and Gatsby fought about who Daisy truly loved. Gatsby and Daisy ended up heading for home together before the rest of them. When they were driving through the Valley of Ashes, Daisy ran Myrtle over. She did not stop, she just kept on driving. When they arrived home, Gatsby waited outside to make sure that she was okay. Daisy never talked to him again and Gatsby dies soon after. Daisy didn’t even feel close enough to him to even attend his funeral. She didn’t even send a note. Daisy felt that if she wanted to live the American dream she needed a man that had money and in the end, she lost Gatsby but still had Tom.
Myrtle, Gatsby, and Daisy all believed that the perfect American dream was to have both money and love. They soon found out that it was hard to have both. They realized that you sometime can’t always get what you want. During this story everyone lost what they secretly and truly wanted. Myrtle lost her life because of Tom. She thought it was Tom in the car, but it wasn’t. Gatsby lost his life because of Daisy. If he wouldn’t have been going after her, tom may have never even known him to tell Wilson that he was the one driving the car that hit Myrtle. Daisy lost Gatsby completely because she hit Myrtle and didn’t turn herself in. With this story’s American dream, it is very hard to live a happy life with both money and love together.

When he was working on Lake Superior, he told Dan Cody about a storm that was coming in and Dan then was so please with him that he made him is personal assistant. That is how he got the name Jay Gatsby. When Dan died Gatsby got $25000 from him. Nick hadn't seen Gatsby or daisy for awhile so he stopped at Gatsby's house and was surprised to see Tom there. Gatsby ends up telling Tom that he knows Daisy and that next Saturday Tom and Daisy went to Gatsby's party together. Tom was concerned about all the time they were spending together. Gatsby believes that he can make things return to how they were before.
I think Tom starts to feel the loss of Daisy. He seems to act like its a big thing that she is hanging out with Gatsby but yet he can hang out with Myrtle. Tom seems to want to be in control and doesn't want to lose Daisy but yet he doesn't want to have to settle himself down either.
Question: Do Tom and Daisy separate.

Chapter 4:
Nick ends up going out to lunch with Gatsby. at lunch they talked about all the things that Gatsby had done years ago. Gatsby gets pulled over for speeding but when Gatsby shows him a white card the officer apologizes for stopping him. after they ate, nick runs into Jordan. Jordan then begins to tell him about the meeting that she had with Gatsby the night before. Gatsby claims that he and daisy use to be in love but when he went away to war she married tom. He said that he build his mansion where it is so he could be close to her. He wants nick to invite her over for tea sometime that way he can see her. he doesn't want her to know that he will be coming because he is afraid that she wont want to see him.
this chapter is about holding on to the ones you use to love. Gatsby seems to still be in love with Daisy but yet he is afraid to tell her how he truly feels. Sometimes it is hard to yet go of the first ones that you loved. you'll always remember your "first" everything.
Question: What was it that Gatsby showed the officer?

Chapter 3:
Nick is invited to Gatsby party. While he is there he ends up meeting up with Jordan because she is the only one that he actually knows. The two of them seemed to keep to themselves for the most part. They did end up going to watch everyone else to get entertained. While they were watching everyone else, a guy came up and asked Nick if they had met before. turned out that this guy was Mr. Gatsby. the two of them had fought together in the WW 1. later during the night Jordan was called into Gatsby's office. Nick then began to express how he felt about Jordan even though she cheated and what not. Nick thinks that he is a very honest person. When they were going home they ran into a guy that had gone into the ditch. he was drunk.
Mutability may be shown in this chapter because of the way Nick is accepting Jordan. He knows that Jordan is not an honest person and he is a very honest person, but yet he is still attracted to her.
Question: What happened to the guy in the ditch? Did he ever get any help?

Tom and myrtle seem to be trying to live a better life than what they have. They are both married but yet they are having an affiar. The affair is somewhat open. It seems like Myrtle isn't exactly happy with her husband or its just cause he is clueless
Question: Wouldn't myrtle's husband figure it out that something was going beings they have done stuff more than once?

Chapter 1:
Nick Carraway is the main character in this chapter. He lives in West Egg, New york, but went to East Egg, New York to visit his cousin, Daisy. Daisy is married to Tom Buchannan. Nick, Daisy and Tom are going out of supper. While they were there Jordan, Daisy's friend meets up with them. Nick and Jordan begin to talk. While they are talking Nick's phone rings and it is a girl from New York City. Before Nick could get away from Daisy and Tom, they told him that he should go after Jordan. They also start talking about Gatsby and how great he is. Nick lives next door to him but has never really seen him before.
You can defiantly tell that Nick is young and in his 20s because of the way he reacts around girls. He has one calling him from New York City and is also talking to Jordan.Nick seems to be seeking a higher rank in society. He seems like he wants more than what he has so he is going to try his hardest to do great things.

The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald seemed to live a not so happy life. He seemed to always be looking for happiness. His characters in The Great Gatsby also seem to be seem to be searching for happiness. The lower class is trying to become better, but the dream they want is ruined by reality. Fitzgerald also seemed to live part of his life in the lower class, trying to get higher by writing. Fitzgerald married Zelda Sayra, but she ended up having an affair. In the novel Daisy also has an affair. Fitzgerald's dreams never came true, they always seemed to be destroyed. In the novel it shows how there is no such thing as a "perfect" life.
I think this quote mean that Fitzgerald writes for everyone. He thinks that it is important for people of his generation to enjoy the writing as much as people down the road.
Some of the things that happened during the 1920s were the search and discovery of gasoline. Walt Disney had his first production. The great depression took place in the late 1920s. The first nonstop solo fight across the Atlantic Ocean.
Translation: to erect a momentum lasting a great amount of time.

Thesis Paper:
Henry uses war to turn his weaknesses into strengths.
Before Henry actually gets to war and sees how things really are, he has a lot of courage in himself and he talks very big of himself. Once Henry gets there, he gets scared and is afraid. He runs away and doesn’t fight all the battles. Henry soon realizes that he came to fight and not just watch everyone else do the job. He then begins to fight and does a great job. The flag carrier gets killed and Henry and Wilson run other to retrieve it. They both carry it for a while, but before too long Henry is the only one carrying it. “The youth and his friend had a small scuffle over the flag."Give it t' me!" "No, let me keep it!" Each felt satisfied with the other's possession of it, but each felt bound to declare, by an offer to carry the emblem, his willingness to further risk himself. The youth roughly pushed his friend away” (Crane 19). Henry carried the flag with great pride and confidence. He was able to say that he has done his job and would do anything to support his country. Henry stood tall while carrying the flag.
Henry was very afraid of everything that was happening. He was overwhelmed with everything that he said and with everything that was going on. Henry didn’t realize what he was really getting into when he enlisted for the war. He ran away from his regiment. Henry ran into the tattered man and he seemed to annoy him. Although, the tattered man did give him a new look on what he really was doing. He made Henry feel guilty from running away and not fight with the rest of his regiment. “The simple questions of the tattered man had been knife thrusts to him. These thoughts uplifted him. He felt the quiver of war desire. In his ears, he heard the ring of victory. He knew the frenzy of a rapid successful charge. The music of the trampling feet, the sharp voices, the clanking arms of the column near him made him soar on the red wings of war. For a few moments he was sublime”(Crane 10). Henry had the courage to go back and face his regiment after he had left. Henry did lie to them about the injury he showed up with, but he did fight hard when it came to the last few battles. It takes a lot of courage to face the rest of the group after running away and not fighting with them.
At the beginning of the book Henry is known as the youth because he is new to war. He didn’t know what he was really in for and the experienced soldiers all know what to expect. Once the battles first begin, Henry isn’t one who the leaders think of when they think of a good fighter. He was never around and they honestly didn’t know what kind of fighter he really was. Once Henry returned to his regiment, he began to fight with everything he had. He showed a large amount of strength and courage. During one of the last battles, Henry’s regiment was asked to fight on the front line because one of the leaders heard that they were the best. Henry became known as one of the best fighters. “Regarding his procession of memory he felt gleeful and unregretting, for in it his public deeds were paraded in great and shining prominence. Those performances which had been witnessed by his fellows marched now in wide purple and gold, having various deflections. They went gayly with music. It was pleasure to watch these things. He spent delightful minutes viewing the gilded images of memory. He saw that he was good. He recalled with a thrill of joy the respectful comments of his fellows upon his conduct” (Crane 23).

Henry Fleming: He is the main character in the book. He is often referred to as the Youth. He goes to battle expecting one thing, but soon learning that it's a completely different thing than what he had expected. He ended up running away from war in the beginning of the book, but by the end of the book he fights with everything he has! By the end of the book Henry had a lot more courage than he did thought he did in the beginning.
Jim Conklin: He is often referred to as the tall soldier. Henry gets wounded in the first battle and then you don't see much of him for awhile. Henry soon runs into him and sees his friend die. Jim died because of his wounds from the first battle.
Wilson: He is Henry's closest friend during war. They both share the pain and agony of war together. They help each other when they can tell they need it but stay back when they know that they will be fine.
Tattered Soldier: Henry comes across him when he was look at all the wounded men. The tattered man began talking to Henry and Henry soon became annoyed with him and thought that he was a pain in the butt!

Henry's Mother: She doesn't seem to happy about Henry going to war. Before he goes she tells him to be smart and make sure that he doesn't do anything that would make her ashamed of him. She seems to stick in Henry's head throughout the book.

Chapter 24:
THIS IS THE LAST CHAPTER!!! Henry and his regiment are heading back to the river and on their way he is thinking about how he acted before. He almost seems ashamed that he backed down, like he's disappointed in himself. He then realizes that he had come out of it and did a great job with what he had come there to do! He begins thinking about what the world would be like with everyone got a long and there was no war and fighting, he thinks that the world would be much happier place. I agree!!! While Henry was thinking about all this stuff, it had rained and a ray of sunlight came down from the sky!!
I'm not so sure that I like the way this book ended. In the beginning of the book when Henry's mother is talking to him and stuff sort of made me want to know what she thought of when he returned home. I was actually looking forward to that part but I guess that part was added in the book! lol :)
Question: What did Henry's mother think of him when he came home from the war? Was she proud of him? or was she ashamed of him?

Chapter 23:
Henry is told that he and his regiment need to charge at the enemy's fence. If they don't charge, the enemy will charge at them and they will die. Henry and Wilson fight with everything they have at this point. During the battle, the enemy's flag carrier got shot. Henry and Wilson went and got the flag because they thought t hat it would be a big deal! While they were getting the flag they also go four prisoners.
I think Henry and Wilson have a lot courage! They went and got the rebel's flag because they thought it would be cool, not because that meant they won. Did it? They both have become very good men. Henry has changed a lot since the beginning of the book.
Question: Why did they want to flag so bad? Did they just want it or was there some special reason that they wanted it?

Chapter 22:
There was a surprise attack. Henry got really close to the rebels that he could see their faces. Henry is still carrying the flag. He sees many men get shot and die! He soon the finds protection. He sees Wilson but doesn't seem concerned because he knows that Wilson knows what he is doing. Not everyone found a place to hide for protection.
In this Chapter I think Henry seems to be smart. He doesn't run, but he hides himself behind things. I think Henry used his head when thinking about what he should and shouldn't do.
Question: Why did everyone hide behind something? Why would you just stand out in the open when you could hide and get the enemy off guard?

Chapter 21:
They were celebrating their commander came up and told them that if they would have pushed them 100 more yards they would have been more successful. They thought they did a good job with what they had done. After they sat there thinking that they didn't do a good job and younger soldier came up and told Henry and Wilson that he heard that the two of them were the best two fighters. The two of them didn't really take the comment to heart.
I think Henry wanted to be a better fighter but it was hard for him to get what he had done in past out of everyone's heads. He knew he could do better! When everyone just accuse him on running in the battles that he did and not the battles that he fought, it is hard them to see what he really can do.
Question: I'm a little confused on why they didn't have a victory. I thought it was a victory until the commander tells them that they needed to pushed them back 100 more yards. So does that mean it wasn't a victory?

Chapter 20:
While Henry and Wilson are still carrying the flag, they begin to fight over who will be the only flag carrier. Henry ends up pushing Wilson away which makes him the only one carrying the flag. The soldiers all end up getting pushed further and further back into the trees because so many soldiers are dying and they aren't fighting well enough to keep up with the rebels. Henry hates this because he wants a victory because someone had said that they were worthless and couldn't fight very well. Wilson begins telling Henry goodbye because he didn't think that they wouldn't make. Henry is angry because of this and tells him to stop talking like and that they will make it. When the battle is over and the air cleared, they had noticed that they defeated their enemy.
In this chapter I think that Henry seems to become a sort of leader. He seems to tell everyone when they think that they are going to be defeated and that they are done for he encourages them to keep going and that they will make it through.
Question: Henry seems to be a changed man than what he was before. Henry seems to have a lot more confidence, what made him to be so afraid before and now standing for it?

Chapter 19:
The battle begins! They were told to not fire right away and wait for the rebels to get closer to them. When they were told to fight they didn't seem to move they just laid there until Wilson fired the first shot. Many soldiers were dying all around Henry. The Soldiers moved around the battle field switching up their positions. While they were moving to different locations, many soldiers got shot. The man carrier the flag went down and Henry and Wilson grabbed the flag from him.
This chapter shows disregard for human life. People just go crazy and kill everyone. The enemy knows nothing about them and what they have at home, they just kill everyone. They don't really care who they are, they are told to fight and kill so that is what they do.
Question: Why didn't the soldiers all fire when they were told to? Were they to scared or what?

Chapter 18:
Henry comes across a a wounded soldier and is trying to find water to help, but there is not water anywhere that he can find. The general tells his regiment to get ready to fight because they would soon be having to charge. The general even made the comment that he thought that they would make it out alive.
In this chapter I think that the whole regiment became more confident. They were chosen to be the ones to fight from all other regiments. I would hope that the soldiers would have confidence when they are fighting and telling themselves that they can do it and they will come out alive.
Question: Why does the general have to reassure them that they will make it out alive during this battle? I think that the soldiers should have believe that they can!

Chapter 17:
A battle breaks out again in this chapter. Henry seems to have gone crazy. He is fighting in the front line and doing a great job at it. The general told him that he was doing a great job. He told him that if everyone fought the way he did, the battle would be over in a week. They pushed the army back to where they came from. After this battle Henry thought very highly of himself.
I think Henry has finally realized that he needs to fight. He came here to fight not run away. He knew all the dangers coming into the war.
Question: If Henry is such an amazing fighter why did he run before?

Chapter 16:
Henry and his regiment begin to march again because there will soon be another battle. Henry is finally going to go and fight in this battle. Henry starts saying that the reason they haven't been winning is because of the leadership the regiment has. The general moved the regiment into the forest and Henry thinks that's bad idea because that is where he thinks the enemy is waiting for them.
In this chapter I think Henry seems to becoming more mature. He hasn't been there to fight and he just steps in saying what he thinks is right and wrong. He just said what he thought, but if it would be me I would be a follower beings i had run so many times before.
Question: Why is Henry complaining about leadership when he is the one that always runs?

Chapter 15:
Henry remembers that he has the envelope with the letter to Wilson's parents if he died. He was going to give it back but then decided to keep it. Not long after that Wilson ends up asking for the envelope back, so Henry got it out and gave it back to him. Wilson is ashamed of the letter now because of how he wrote that he was so afraid of death and everything. Wilson now has a different view of things then he did when he wrote the letter.
Henry is not very trustworthy to Wilson in this chapter. I don't understand why Henry wouldn't have just given back the letter in the first place. A true friend would have given it back right away or at least ask if they wanted it back or if they still would like for them to keep holding on to it.
Question: What good did that letter do to Henry that he wouldn't give it back right away?

Chapter 14:
Henry awakes to the sounds of fighting in the distance. When Wilson comes along and starts talking to him and asking him how he is feeling Henry tells him that he is not feeling the best. Wilson tell him to eat and maybe that would help. While they are talking Henry also tells Wilson that Jim had gotten shot in the side and had died.
I don't think Henry is very loyal. He lies about what happened to him and everything. It almost seems as if this is what he wanted, he wanted to get hurt so he felt important.
Question: Does Henry really not feel better? or does he just like the attention and he doesn't want to feel better?

Chapter 13:
Henry gets back to his regiment and meets up with Wilson again. They are both excited to each other. They are talking when Henry tells Wilson that he got shot in the head. Wilson then takes Henry to the nurse that way they can take care of him. Henry seems to be babied a lot but you can tell he enjoys the attention.
In this chapter I think courage is shown. He finally went back to his regiment, but did he only go back now because he was injured? I don't think they if Henry never got hurt he still would not have gone back to be with his regiment. Henry also lied about getting shot in the head. He really got hit with a rifle.
Question: Is Henry really looking for that much attention that he has to lie about what really happened to him?

Chapter 12:
Henry notices how all the soldiers are running and he doesn't know why. He grabs one of the soldiers and asks why but the soldier tells him to let him and leave him alone. Henry continues hanging out to him and re asking the question, and then the soldier smokes him in the head with his rifle. Henry is then way out of it and realizes that his head is bleeding. He just sort of hangout out there until this other guy comes along and says that they are going the same direction and that he could give him a lift. He takes him back to his regiment. Henry never even saw this guys face!
I think clean and dirty may play a role in this chapter because Henry seems to remember how neat and nice everything was and home and here everything seems to be a mess.
Question: Why didn't Henry ever look at this guys face? He was helping him out and all that time they talked and he never once looked at him.

Chapter 11:
Henry hears the sound of the battle begin again and he heads over to it. He feels guilty for everything that he has already done so he decides to head to the front line but soon stops because he realizes he doesn't have a rifle so he slows down. He hates doing this because he knows that the other soldiers already know about him running and not fighting and he doesn't want them to think any less of him then they already do. Henry feels terrible and feels really guilty for backing down the way he did.
I think in this chapter Henry is trying to make up for what he had done before, he just wasn't prepared. If he would have had his weapon he may have stayed and fought, but then again you never know what he would have done.
Question: Wasn't there another gun lying around somewhere on the ground? I'm sure that some dead guy would let him have his gun!

Chapter 10:
In this chapter Henry and the tattered man are still walking along. The tattered man starts talking about how he didn't feel the best and Henry became nervous because he thought that he was about to witness another death. The tattered man reassured him and told him that he had a family that he had to get back to and that he was not about to die and leave them. The tattered man begins to question about where his injury was and Henry ended up telling him to leave him alone and talked off alone.
In this chapter I think Henry questions how courageous he really is. He feels guilty for running and to fighting. The tattered man and everyone else that is injuried seem to make him feel bad and that he isn't doing the right things. I think that if he isn't going to fight then he shouldn't have enlisted.
Question:Why wouldn't Henry go back and fight if he felt so guilty about running the first time.

Chapter 9:
Henry ends up running into Jim! Jim was very excited to see him because he thought that Henry might have died in battle. Henry was excited to see Jim as well. Jim didn't look very good, he was all bloody and didn't seem like himself. They were walking and talking when Jim told Henry what his biggest fear was. His biggest fear was getting ran over by the artillery wagon. Henry told him that he would take good care of him and not to worry. Jim the started to slow down and Henry told him to keep walking or he'd get ran over. Jim tells him to leave him alone and go on. Jim ends up dying.
In this chapter I think Henry seems to may have gotten a new look on this whole fighting thing. It seems as if watching Jim, though, he may have questioned some things. I think the Jim biggest fear really showed Henry that fighting was not what he was afraid of.
Question: Why doesn't Jim want them to take him to the field? Why does he want to be left right where he fell down?

Quiz #1
1. What advice does Henry's mother give him?
Henry's mother doesn't really want Henry to go off to wear. Once Henry tells her that he has enlisted, she tells him to not begin to act the other men. She tells him that they will swear and do bad things and she tells him not to do any of it. Henry's mother wishes he would have just stayed home with her.
2. What question is Henry struggling with?
Henry struggles with the question of whether he should run or not. The first battle he doesn't run but the next time he does. Henry just seems to be really unsure right now of what he really wants to do and what he doesn't want to do.
3. What does the "dead soldier" represent?
The dead soldier seems to represent that battle is up ahead. It always seems like they seem a dead soldier and the next thing you know they are fighting. I also think the dead soldier represents death. Once Henry sees the dead soldier, it's almost like his mind set changes and he questions why he is really there.
4. What is the "red rage?" Describe.
The "red rage" is where the soldiers go crazy when it comes to battle. They start chanting songs and everything. The soldiers seem to get this feeling of the need to kill people and they get all sorts of energy and go wild.

Chapter 8:
In this chapter Henry once again hears the sound of battle, so he heads towards the battle. He walks past many dead bodies and finally get to the road where he can see the soldiers. Many of them are wounded and are complaining that they are in a lot of pain. Henry then starts walking beside a wounded guys who makes a comment to him about the battle being fought well. Henry then becomes guilty for running and not fighting with his army.
Henry is a very changed man than what he was in the beginning. He talked like he was ready and that he was strong and wasn't afraid of anything. I don't think that he should have enlisted if he wasn't ready to stand up for his country.
Question: If Henry wasn't ready to fight then why did he enlist? I don't understand why he is there if he runs away from everything. I can't believe that he won't fight with the rest of his men.

Chapter 7:
In this chapter Henry goes off to walk alone for awhile. Henry seems as if he regrets running from the line of battle. He seems jealous because he hadn't helped win the battle. While he is walking he runs into a chapel. When he walks in he sees a dead soldier starring at him. The dead soldier freightened Henry and he just stood there and starred back into his eyes.
In this chapter I think Henry seemed to have changed personalities. It almost seems as if he was mad at the rest of the army. He should have been happy that they had defeated the enemy and been happy for them. I think that beings he is so young that each battle will make him a stronger man. Even though he ran from it this time, I still think he learned a lot.
Question: Aren't they in like an open battle field? Why would Henry wonder away alone? Will he be able to find the rest of his men?

Chapter 6:
In this chapter another battle breaks out. They were fighting the same army that they had fought earlier. Their enemy wanted revenge so they came back for more. The soldiers were all tired and sore and didn't really want to get up. They felt as if they were the only ones fighting the rebels and wanted supports to be sent out to help them. Many of the soldiers from the front line ran away, including Henry. Henry felt as if this battle was way different from the first battle. He felt that their enemy would defeat them, so he fled. A general had then came up to him and told him that the front line had held them back.
I think this chapter demonstrates loyalty. The soldiers that fled and ran away from the battle were not very loyal to the rest of the soldiers. Everyone has to do their part in order to come out on top.
Question: Why did Henry all of a sudden change his thought on fighting? Was he just that much more tired compared to last time that made his mental mind not the same as the first battle?

Chapter 5:
This chapter is where all the fighting begins. Henry was in the front and his captian was in the back giving orders. The enemy came from behind them. Henry didn't take off running like he thought that he would. He faced the question of whether to shoot or not, he dicided to shoot. A lot of men die in this battle, including Henry's captain. When the battle had come to an end they seemed to be relieved but at the same time they still seemed to be in shock. Many of them remained silent. The men seemed shocked to still see Nature was still around them. After fighting they just thought that everything would have been destroyed.
I think this chapter demonstrates courage. Henry was afraid that he would run when it came time to fight, but he fired the shots and didn't back down. It almost seemed as if the enemy sort of caught them off guard so they really didn't have anytime to react to what was really hapening.
Question: Since Henry's captain died, who will take over that position? Will Henry get to?

Chapter 4:
This chapter is very short and easy to understand for the most part. They are marching along when they hear the sound of guns and look up and see a lot of men coming at them. The younger soldiers begin to freeze up and just stand there scared and unsure of what to do. A lot of people say that they were injured that way they didn't have to fight, while many were truly injured.
This chapter may be noise and silence because with all the noise that was going on, the younger soldiers told there as if in silence not knowing what to do.
Question:Who is Saunders?
This chapter may be noise and silence because with all the noise that was going on, the younger soldiers told there as if in silence not knowing what to do.
Question:Who is Saunders?
Chapter 3:
This chapter is basically is about what happens while the soldiers are marching. They heard guns fire so they are now off to find where they came from. Henry makes sure he sees and notices everything, he doesn't want to miss out or miss something that is important. Henry pictured a battle field in his head of what he thought it would be like but once they got there it was nothing like he thought it would be. They seen a dead soldier lying in his back with shoes that had thin soles. They could tell that their enemies were veteran because of the color of hat they wore. Henry seems to be way nervous.
I think that this chapter also would fall under youth and maturity because it almost seems like Henry thought that he was ready for this but it turns out that he isn't. Before he had gotten there he seemed fine, but once put in the situation he realized what it was really all about.
Question:Did Henry know Wilson, the guy who gave him the notes to give to his parents? If not, why did Wilson give them to him?

Chapter 2:
They realize that they are going to be going to battle and Henry becomes worried and afraid. He doesn't want to look like a fool when he is out there. He is afraid that he will want to run when the time comes. He feels that this is not where God wanted him to be and he questions whether he really should be there. Someone tries to steel a horse that is outside a house but before they could get away, a little girl comes out so they couldn't take it.
I think in the chapter Henry lacks a lot of courage. He seems to scared and regrets that he enlisted in the war. Before it seems as if he talked so brave and now he questions everything he is doing and what he is going to do.
Question: What is across the river?

Chapter 1:
They are all just hanging out at a camp site and relaxing when a young soldier comes and tells them that they will be moving soon and that there will be fighting taking place before too long. They had a hard time believing him because they have heard this same rumor many of times and nothing ever happens. Henry was talking to Jim and Jim told him to wait until tomorrow when they started to fight, that he would really see what it was all about. Henry seemed to get worried on what he would do, whether he would run of stand his ground and fight.
In this chapter is I see youth and maturity because Henry was called to the army and had to mature to become fit or to have to right mind set to go off to war. He stayed home and helped his mom when he was younger and now it seemed to be his call of duty which he had to respond to.
Question: When Henry has the conversation with his mother, is he thinking back on it as he remembered it? I thought that he was already gone from home.
